Redefining Success: Insights from a Woman Leader in Consulting

January 9, 2025

Hello! I’m Kaly Trupp, a Managing Director at FTI Delta. I came into consulting somewhat unexpectedly. After earning my MBA, consulting wasn’t really on my radar, but a classmate encouraged me to explore FTI Delta, saying, “The culture here is different—you’d love it.” I interviewed, connected with the team’s collaborative and passionate spirit and felt immediately at home. Seven years later, I’m still here, finding purpose in my work, advocating for other women and celebrating the culture that makes it all possible.

One of the things that drew me to FTI Delta was the collaborative culture. In consulting, pressure and competition are common, but FTI Delta values teamwork over rivalry. From the start, I found supportive mentors who offered guidance, feedback and advocacy in ways that empowered me to tackle new challenges. This atmosphere of mentorship and teamwork is rare in consulting and it’s one of the key reasons I chose to stay.

Being a Woman in Consulting

Women bring unique strengths to consulting, often excelling at listening, observing and understanding diverse perspectives—qualities that are essential in building strong client relationships and delivering valuable insights. I used to feel pressured to match my male colleagues’ quick responses, but over time, I embraced my strength of taking time to understand the full picture before speaking up. This approach has allowed me to make more informed decisions and offer meaningful insights and I encourage other women at FTI Delta to lean into their unique styles rather than mirroring anyone else’s. The industry benefits from this diversity of thought.

For many women in consulting, managing career and family is a significant challenge. When I was expecting my first child, I initially assumed it would be best to leave consulting altogether. But my colleagues at FTI Delta were incredibly supportive, supporting me, allowing me to adapt my work and even take extended leave if needed. When I attended our global offsite in Paris at 32 weeks pregnant, my male colleagues ensured I was comfortable and fully included. This support has been crucial, not just for me but for other “FTI Delta mommies” who’ve joined over the years. We’ve built a network that shows family and consulting can go hand in hand when there’s a supportive environment.

Real Models for Real Change

Representation is powerful and seeing more women at every level is inspiring. At FTI Delta, we’ve developed initiatives like the “Women’s Director + ” program and monthly gatherings for mid-level and senior women to connect, share and support each other. These small acts of connection create a network of women who are there to lift each other. I’ll never forget the first time I walked into a client meeting with an all-women team—it felt empowering and it was a reminder of how far we’ve come. These communities make it easier to thrive in consulting and help shape the inclusive culture we want for future generations.

For women considering consulting, my biggest piece of advice is this: don’t assume you’re at a disadvantage because you’re a woman. Early on, we can feel pressured to match our male colleagues’ styles, but the industry needs what we bring to the table. My coach once told me that women make great consultants because we’re often better listeners. That insight stuck with me. In consulting, it’s not just about having the answer but about understanding the client’s needs.

I also encourage women to seek out mentors and advocates. Early in my career, I was lucky to have senior leaders who spoke up for me in rooms I wasn’t in, opening doors for new opportunities. Now, as a Managing Director, I work to be that advocate for others, helping them feel as supported and confident as I did when I started. Advocacy is essential in navigating consulting and making sure every voice is heard.

Looking back, I’m proud of the progress we’ve made and I’m excited for what’s to come. FTI Delta has grown alongside us, creating space for diverse voices and inclusive policies. For the women just stepping into consulting, I hope they feel they belong from day one. It’s incredible to see the shift—from a time when I was often the only woman in the room to now, where more and more teams reflect the diversity and collaboration that makes consulting so impactful.

Being a woman in consulting isn’t always easy, but it’s incredibly rewarding. Consulting lets us learn constantly, solve complex problems and connect with incredible people. For me, FTI Delta is the place that makes it all possible, where women are valued, supported and encouraged to excel in their own unique ways.
